On Monday 19 December 2022, at 12:00-13:00 CET you can join the second Privacy Book Club meeting organized by researchers of the Digital Legal Lab. On Tuesday 10 January 2023, at 16:00-17:30 CET you can join the online Book Club #9, organized by researchers of the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. This time they will be discussing a book picked from the LSTS Books of the Year 2021 list: Invisible women - Data Bias in a World Designed for Men (2019) by Criado Perez, C. . 9th November 16:00 – 17:30 Brussels Time: Conducting DPIAs with Oskar J. Gstrein

Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) are a useful method to spark an interdisciplinary discussion about the collection, storage, management and sharing of personal data. While the GDPR makes them mandatory in certain scenarios of data use, the methodology to implement them varies. In this session we explore ways to teach how to do a DPIA, especially in interdisciplinary teaching settings and scenarios where emerging technologies play a role. The material presented in this session is based on the COMENIUS project Privacy in Research, which was developed by Esther Hoorn at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands.

Visit our DPSN Booth at the EDPS Conference 2022 in Brussels!

The Data Protection Law Scholars Network (DPSN) participates with a booth at the 2022 EDPS Conference “The Future of Data Protection: Effective Enforcement in the Digital World”!

The event takes place on 16 & 17 June 2022 in Brussels. The venue of the EDPS conference is The Egg (Rue Barastraat, 175 1070 Brussels, Belgium) and is open to registered participants. When and where can you find our booth? We will be present both days at the riverside area of The Egg! We will have flyers and limited edition stickers for you! Do not miss the opportunity to get to know our work and have your say about the network’s next steps. You will also have the chance to meet many members of our steering and management committees who are speaking, moderating or attending. We are looking forward to meet you!

DPSN Launch at CPDP 2022

After its first online meet-up in January 2022 on International Data Protection Day that brought together more than 150 data protection law scholars from all over the world, the Data Protection Law Scholars Network (DPSN) will have its official launch in-person at CPDP2022 on Monday 23 May 2022, 19:00-20:00 BXL time at Maison des Arts (Chau. de Haecht 147, 1030 Schaerbeek)! Drinks and some fingerfood will be provided.

At this event, you can expect to meet our members, including many of its Steering and Management Committee members, and network with fellow data protection scholars in an informal setting, as well as engage in an open discussion about what such a network can do for members in order to facilitate their work in the field of data protection.

Data Protection Day Event 2022 - Summary

On 28 January 2022, coinciding with the Data Protection Day, the Data Protection Law Scholars Network organised the first ever international quick meet-up of data protection law researchers. The event brought together more than 150 data protection law scholars from all over the world.

27 speakers, divided into two parallel sessions, presented in 3 slides and 5 minutes their current work, be it a developing PhD, an interesting master thesis, a collection of educational material, an upcoming promising paper or a brand-new project. Attendees were randomly allocated to one of the two parallel streams, without knowing which speakers they will be listening to.

Final programme for our online event on the international Data Protection Day!

On 28 January 2022, coinciding with the international Data Protection Day, the Data Protection Law Scholars Network organises the first ever international quick meet-up of data protection law researchers. The event will take place online, at 13:00-15:10 Brussels time.

Format/What to expect

Speakers were selected through a call for abstracts for very short presentations that the Network launched back in December 2021. Data protection law scholars of all levels of seniority will present in 3 slides and 5 minutes their current work, be it a developing PhD, an interesting master thesis, an upcoming promising paper or a brand-new project. The programme encompasses two sessions, each one consisting of two parallel streams with an equal number of speakers.
The streams are not thematically organised but rather cover diverse and innovative topics of data protection law.
The programme has a further element of surprise, meaning that we will not announce the names of the speakers per session, but attendees will be allocated randomly either to Parallel Stream 1 or to Parallel Stream 2. Throughout the event, participants will be actively encouraged to communicate with each other and network.

The DPSN at CPDP LatAm 2021

We are very glad to participate with a panel to the Conference CPDP LatAm 2021 taking place from July 14th to 16th 2021. The panel takes place on July 16th (Room 3), 10:00-11:30 BRT/ 16:00-17:30 CEST. We hope to meet many of you there!

Panel: Data protection law scholars of the world, unite! (in little groups?) Towards a global data protection network?

In light of the growing importance of data protection laws across the world, there is an increased need for robust international expert networks in the field. Data protection authorities have been meeting regularly for decades already, in a variety of regional and global events (cf. the ICDPPC, now the Global Privacy Assembly), and there is also a significant rise in networks of privacy professional, synchronizing in numerous and dynamic structures (e.g. IAPP). To our knowledge, however, there are no real equivalent networks in the academic community, at least on the same scale. Indeed, despite some notable exceptions such as the Asian Privacy Scholars Network (APSN), there exist no international networks of scholars devoted to furthering research and education on data protection law. Thus, scholars working in the field lack equivalent networks through which to exchange information, be in contact with each other, and reach to and support newcomers. Can this be changed?
